Hello there, mischief-makers!

The first month of Patreon is officially behind me — and I have to say, things are finally starting to settle into a rhythm. April was… a bit of a whirlwind. Balancing Patreon releases alongside regular social media content left very little room to tackle anything beyond the essentials.

Now that things are stabilizing, I can finally turn my attention back to all those last open pieces that have been patiently waiting in the background. There are quite a few promises and smaller upgrades I’ve been wanting to follow up on — like making sure all monsters come with proper quick references, polishing smaller details, and tightening everything up step by step.

It’s a good feeling to shift from “getting everything out there” to making everything better. And I’m really looking forward to bringing those improvements to you over the coming weeks. I also have more plans for other things in the future that need to be worked on, but more about that when I am getting closer to the finishing line for that.

But for now — let’s dive into this month’s mischief. 🎲

The One Encounter You Didn’t Know You Needed

Some creatures are dangerous because of their claws, their fangs, or their spells But others? They’re dangerous because they turn the battlefield into pure chaos.

This month’s creation is one of the latter: a mischievous sprite whose “blessing” (or curse) can turn your party into anything from a wolf to a toad… and back again, over and over.

Every DM loves throwing a riddle at their players - a short interlope to have them break their heads instead of you breaking yours. But let’s be honest: half the table groans when a riddle comes up. They either solve it instantly, or they flounder for an hour and lose momentum. That’s why this month’s encounter flips the trope on its head.

The Sphinx That Doesn’t Know the Answer

This sphinx doesn’t have the answers. Literally. The centuries have blurred together, and now it remembers the riddles… but not the solutions. After it proposed the first riddle, the sphinx leans back and says:

“Hmm. No… that doesn’t sound quite right. Or maybe it does? Yes? No? Ugh, I had it written down somewhere… Anyways, give me the correct answer or meet your end!”

Suddenly, the riddle isn’t about being clever to find the right answer. It is about giving the “right” answer. It’s about being convincing enough to make the sphinx believe their answer is worth accepting.

Instead of players sitting silently, racking their brains, the whole table gets to jump in. The fighter tries a distraction. The bard spins a poetic justification. The wizard appeals to logic. And the rogue? They’re already off to find the answers the forgetful sphinx has actually written down somewhere secretly.

Play It However You Want

What makes this encounter shine is how adaptable it is. It can be comedic, tragic, or even deeply philosophical, depending on your campaign’s tone. You can drop it anywhere - at the gates of a dungeon, in front of a portal, or as a random diversion in the desert. You simply replace the sphinx with another appropriate guardian: a golem, an old sage, a sentient old beast, or similar. And it always works, because it’s not about solving a puzzle… it’s about playing it out.

Give your players the joy of creative problem-solving without the frustration of “guess what the DM is thinking.” Let them argue, persuade, and twist words to their heart’s content, while you revel in watching their answers shape the story.

All is going well

The Patreon is now fully up and running — and the first month of content is live. From monsters and magic items to spells, feats, NPCs, and full encounters, there’s already a solid foundation to explore.

The shapeshifter theme was an absolute blast to work on, and it feels great to finally have it out in the wild. I waited a long time with it because I wanted to use it especially for the launch. Now it’s time to look ahead: the next theme is already taking shape — and it’s very likely heading into insectoid, hive-minded territory. 🐜

While the Founder spots have all been claimed (which still blows my mind a bit), the doors are very much open if you’d like to jump in now. And honestly, this is where things get interesting — shaping what comes next together.

If you feel like being part of that, I’d love to have you along. Your ideas, feedback, and perspectives are what will help this grow into something even better. Once I am done finishing the last touches on the website, I plan to up my game on Patreon even more!
