Hello there, mischief-makers!
By the time you’re reading this, I’m most likely somewhere in transit, making my looong way back home. The vacation is officially over - and while I did manage to sneak in some work for the upcoming Patreon launch, I’ll admit something: writing the Quick References (for each monster) are taking quite a bit longer than I originally planned.
That said, the April launch is still firmly locked in. I was contemplating to delay it but I know this is just my perfectionistic tendencies taking over. As I have told you in the last newsletter, the main bulk of work is done. So, why wait? Right?
So, what may shift slightly is the completeness of everything in the backlog. Not every piece might have the quick references and there may still be some edit work to do. I’ll continue refining, expanding, and improving things week by week after launch. This project has always been about building something sustainable and long-term, not rushing to check boxes. I hope you see it the same way.
Progress is happening and while I love setting aggressive goals that can’t always work out. And honestly? I’d rather launch something strong and keep improving it than delay indefinitely chasing “perfect.” The theme of the Patreon will be “Nothing is static. Everything adapts.” anyways. ;-)

As always, thank you for being here and following along on this journey. Now, let’s get to this month’s mischief. 🎲
Is Your Campaign Missing This Critical Element?
Combat in D&D is thrilling - but let’s be honest, sometimes it feels a bit too mechanical. Enemies swing, players counter, and the cycle repeats until one side drops. But what if I told you a single whispered word or cry of panic could completely change the way your players experience a fight?

A Sliver of Roleplay
The trick is simple: give your enemies a voice. Not speeches, not monologues - just snippets. A goblin squealing, “They killed Giblob! Run!” before it breaks ranks. A wolf snarling but still circling protectively around its wounded mate. A devil „offering“ their deal again before they stab at the downed character. Or a bandit gasping out an apology to their wife at home in the moment when the player dealt the lethal amount of damage.
Running combat as Dungeon Master is a hectic undertaking: countless stats to manage, interaction to keep track, and player questions to answer. So, the good thing about this trick is, it’s effortless: just a word or two at the right moment will do. All you need to do is get into the habit of doing it and not forgetting about it.
Few Words, Big Impact
Why does this matter? Because words anchor the fight in story. They remind players that they’re not just cutting down nameless stat blocks - they’re clashing with creatures that feel fear, loyalty, greed, and even love. Suddenly, the fighter’s killing blow isn’t just a dice roll; it’s a moment heavy with consequence. The wizard’s fireball isn’t just efficient crowd control - it’s a terrifying, world-shaking blast to anyone caught in its area.
By sprinkling these small lines into combat, you blur the rigid border between “tactical play” and “roleplay.” You shift your table from optimizing damage per round to making meaningful choices and immerse themselves in the world you have built. And you do it without prep - just a few words in the heat of battle.
Looking for monsters or encounters where you can try that?

Since there are no direct new homebrew stats from me this month, I figured it’s the perfect opportunity to spotlight a fellow creator. (Yes - I finally have something genuinely exciting to share...)
Have you heard of Ariadne’s Codex of Strings and their upcoming book, Ariadne’s Book of Legends? If not, it’s absolutely worth a look.
This project dives into true epic-tier play, expanding content for levels 21 through 25. Every class receives new high-level abilities, alongside devastating 10th-level spells for spellcasters and mythical techniques for martial characters. There are also customizable heroic paths to further shape your character - as you’ll likely need every advantage you can get if you plan on standing a chance against their CR 30+ monsters.
If epic-tier content is your thing, their Kickstarter is currently live. It’s a great chance to grab early backer rewards before the campaign wraps up. They also provided me with the code LEGENDARYMIMIC which you can use to get the DLC for free!

If you want to talk about how you’d use this at your table, Discord’s open.
If you missed it, last month’s mischief is here.
This newsletter hopefully provides you with some creative ideas that bring joy and memorable sessions to your table.
